A note on recordings of Beethoven's symphonies:
Solti and the CSO recorded all of Beethoven's symphonies in 1972-1974. They were released as a box set in 1975 which won a Grammy for Classical Album of the Year. For more information, see the CSO Archives Blog.

    Janos Starker (not credited) played the cello duet with Ray in the 3rd movement; he started teaching at Indiana that fall, but presumably returned to Chicago for this recording.

  2. With Macdowell Piano Concerto No. 2; Cliburn, Reiner, CSO.
    Frank Miller (not credited) played the cello duet with Ray in the 3rd movement; Ray's favorite version of it. 1959; apparently Miller was first cello both before and after LaMarchina was.

  3. Richter, Leinsdorf, CSO. 1960.
    Robert LaMarchina (credited) played the cello duet with Ray in the 3rd movement; he only played first cello in the CSO for one year (1960-61).

  3. Ray played first oboe, filling in for Robert Bloom at Bloom's request; this was Ray's first commercial recording. Stokowski asked him to play like “a screaming eunuch—quite virile” in the Bacchanale movement (Chicago Magazine interview, Sept. 1986). Listed as recorded in Sept. 1954 and released in 1955, but Ray recalls recording it when he was in Baltimore, which would have been summer 1953 or earlier.
